West Ham United have been dealt a late injury setback ahead of their upcoming Premier League clash this afternoon.
What’s the latest?
Speaking in his pre-match press conference, David Moyes revealed that, while Kurt Zouma looks as if he will be available for selection after the centre-back recovered from an illness, West Ham could still be without one or two players on Saturday afternoon, as the 58-year-old has injury doubts regarding an unnamed duo ahead of the visit of Newcastle United.
Speaking about Zouma’s condition, the Scotsman said: “He’s better, but it’s taken him a couple of days to get over it. He had a quite bad illness. He’s trained the last couple of days so I’m hoping that he’ll be available.
“We want him to concentrate on his training. We’re hoping that we can keep him at those levels of performances. Hopefully, he can focus on his football and we’ll give him as much support as we can before we get him ready back to his best.”
However, regarding the general condition of his squad, Moyes added: “We’ve got one or two doubts and one or two question marks over some players who’ve picked up some injuries. I wouldn’t give that away, but like every other club, we’ve got one or two injuries at the moment.”
Fans will be fuming
While the news that Zouma is set to return to the starting XI this afternoon is certainly a boost for the Irons, the fact that Moyes appears to have two fresh injury concerns is undoubtedly an update that will leave the London Stadium faithful fuming.
Indeed, with Angelo Ogbonna and Arthur Masuaku already sidelined for the visit of the Magpies, the 58-year-old’s side is already running extremely light in a number of positions across the pitch – something which the club failed to address in the January transfer window.
And, with Eddie Howe’s outfit having won their last three consecutive Premier League fixtures, as well as remaining unbeaten in their last five league outings, Newcastle appear to very much be a team on the up, with West Ham needing to ensure they are at their absolute best if they are to take anything from this afternoon’s clash.
As such, the news that Moyes is having to contend with yet more injuries within his first-team squad is sure to come as a major blow to the 58-year-old and fans of the club alike, as, should the Hammers have serious ambitions of securing a top-four finish in the league this season, a fixture against Newcastle at home is a game they simply must be winning.
